We recently had a patient and her family that was living in a one-room hotel. There was a total of 4 people sharing one room and one bathroom. The family was finally able to get Habitat housing but had very little to take with them.
Teirraha arranged for the family to get furniture to help them out and to make it more like home. We have patients on our unit that sometimes have to go into foster care. Teirraha always makes sure these patients have clothes and shoes if possible, to take with them when they leave with a "new" family. She will bring her own child's clothing and shoes to give these patients if we are unable to locate them clothing on the unit.
We had another patient who was going to her senior prom. She had gone bald from her chemotherapy and did not want to go to her prom without her hair. Teirraha got the ball rolling and was able to get the patient not only a wig but also a dream prom dress. This was so important for the patient not just because it was her prom but because she did not attend her junior prom.
She has brought food from outside restaurants for patients who did not have families at their bedside and really wanted something special that was unable to be provided by the cafeteria and gift shop. She did this without asking for reimbursement or even a simple thank you.
Teirraha always wants to make sure our patients feel at home and they feel special. These are just a few things she has done to help out our families. When there is a crisis with a family she is the first to step up to get the ball rolling to get it taken care of. She is the charge nurse of two units which see two different types of patients but she is able to fit in and take care of the patients on either side. We have patients and families that come in and always ask if she is there just so they can say hi. We recently had a decrease in parking passes and food vouchers being available to our patients. Some of these patients are in desperate need of these. She always makes sure to have them available when these patients come in. Without her help, our unit would not be as great with all her help on a daily basis and watching out for the wellbeing of our patients.
