...I have a fractured right wrist (two fractures, requiring cast, and fractured ribs. During this hospital stay, I was told that there was the possibility of both breast and lung cancer, which caused me fear and anxiety as I did not know I would manage all of this. Needless to say, this has been a very difficult hospitalization.

During this stay, I had a nurse named Susie who must have been called by God to become a nurse. She was a God-send! She was very kind, compassionate and loving in her care for me. I would like to share my story.

One of the first things I observed with Susie is that she offered to make me fresh decaf coffee when it was into the evening and drinking caffeine would not have been best for me. She made a fresh pot for me and a couple other patients as well.

One night around 3am, I was crying, finding it hard to deal with my physical limitations due to the fractures, as well as the possibility of having cancer. I was unable to sleep. Susie came in and stroked my hair - like my mother used to do when I was a child, bringing me comfort. She also massaged my back for me.

Previously, while working with physical therapy, the therapists indicated that I would benefit from a gripper pack (hip fracture pack) so that I could use my left arm to pick things up, get my socks on and so forth. The pack also has a back sponge/scrubber and shoe horn as well. I needed this because I cannot use my right arm while it is casted.

I had asked how much this cost and was told around $20 which I really do not have as finances are tight. I thought that maybe my adult children could purchase for me as an early birthday present. I did not say anything more. That next morning at 8am a woman from the Banner Thunderbird gift shop knocked at my door and said she had a delivery for me. It was a beautifully wrapped package and when I opened it - it was the entire hip kit with all of the tools I need. I was so touched by the kindness, thoughtfulness, and compassion extended to me by Susie.

My nurse Susie is one of the most beautiful souls God created. I am forever touched by the heart that this woman has. I will never forget her.
