The nursing staff of our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nominated Susan for the DAISY Award. Susan floated out to the Mother Baby Postpartum care one night. After receiving report, she entered the patient’s room to check on the couplet and introduce herself. In the room, Susan noted the mom to appear to be breastfeeding in a side-lying position and was unable to visualize the infant. Mom stated the baby had fallen asleep. Susan went to other side of bed so that she could visualize the baby better and noticed immediately that the infant was blue and not breathing. She began infant CPR, notified NICU, with a lot of expert teamwork all efforts resulted in a successful resuscitation. If Susan were not the reasonable and prudent nurse that she is and cares for her patients and their safety, this couplet could easily have fallen thru the cracks. Had Susan not entered that room when she did the baby would have died while attempting to breastfeed.
Susan is a valuable asset to NICU our and to our hospital. She demonstrates all the criteria of a DAISY Nurse with her actions and individual attention to each baby in the NICU. She creates one of a kind keepsake name cards for EVERY baby in the NICU and the families look forward to seeing their babies unique crib card.
