Susan was caring for a patient who is receiving end of life care. This patient was being straight cathed every 8 hours by recommendation of the attending physician in lieu of having an indwelling foley. The attending physician believed this would be a better option to reduce the risk of infection and thus potentially prolong the patient's life.

During morning rounds, Susan expressed that the patient was traumatized every time she was straight cathed. Susan was met with objection, but continued to explain her position on the matter and her concern for her patient. In the end, the team decided to consider placing an indwelling foley and administer a prophylactic antibiotic in lieu of straight cathing every 8 hours.
Susan exemplified what it means to advocate for your patient, and she was a wonderful example of the type of nurse St. Louis Children's Hospital employs.

Susan's advocacy lead to exceptional service for her patient at a very difficult time for the patient and her family.
