Summer received 2 separate DAISY nominations. The first was by her Unit Director and the other was from a patient.
#1 - Unit Director – “We had a patient on 6 South who was young in her early 30’s with metastatic colon cancer. She had ongoing issues with her family and only had her sister as a companion and her sister was caring for her 9 year old son while she was hospitalized. She was also very stressed about custody issues with her ex-boyfriend. Patient has no real relationship with her mom who lives out of state. Patient very depressed, sad and lonely knowing she is dying from cancer and doesn’t have anyone with her in hospital. Summer cared for patient several times during her hospital stay and after her shift was over sometimes she would just to into the patient’s room, sit with her, hold her hand and talk to her. Summer went out one night and bought patient a fluffy and cozy soft pink blanket. Summer told patient that when she was younger and was sad and lonely that her blanket always made her feel better. Summer thought a cozy blanket might help her. The patient wore the blanket on her everyday and did get some relief for her loneliness. The patient recently passed away but I know she is in heaven, looking down and smiling at Summer for being an extraordinary person and nurse while holding her fuzzy blanket!
#2 – Patient – “Having surgery that you don’t want in the first place is a scary thing. Being in the hospital is a scary thing, but the staff of 6 South made my hospital stay as pleasant as possible. I was treated with kindness and compassion. Whether Summer was helping me to get out of bed and walk or bringing me a warm blanket, I felt cared for. Not only that, you all cared for my family as well, which means a great deal to me. Thank you for everything that you did for me. I will never forget your faces and the care you provided.
