A young 29 year old male had been admitted with metastatic cancer. Having a young family, many of us who cared for him could relate. As his cancer progressed and treatment failed, we sadly grew to know how much of a hardship his family was burdened with. His wife, his childhood sweetheart, and his three beautiful children, the youngest 4 months old, and the only boy.

As many of us had encounters with this patient, there was one particular staff member who really connected with him and his family. Not only did she connect, Stacy Mathieu, RN, went above and beyond. After many conversations regarding life and family and learning GB would never walk again, bed-bound for the short remainder of his life, Stacy decided a family photo was in order. After discussing her idea with the patient and his enthusiastic family, Stacy made a call to her photographer friend, who, without hesitation, came in within a couple of days (pro-bono) and arranged a family photo shoot right in the patient's room!

Masking as much as possible, IV poles and hospital bed draped in linen, a beautiful moment was created; a family filled with such grief and sadness had a moment of "normal", a family photo they will forever cherish and all because a nurse cared and went above and beyond.

Stacy later printed and framed the photos, presenting them to GB and his wife.

When medical treatment fails, human kindness can prevail.
