One of our ICU patients came in as a DOE. He was found on the street and was intubated and unresponsive. We didn't know who he was for days. After he finally woke up and was well enough to identify himself he also revealed that he had lost everything that he had to his name when they brought him in. Shelly Gagnon, one of the MICU nurses, heard that our homeless patient lost all of his belongings when he was brought in. She took some donations on the unit and went to Walmart and bought him a new backpack, lightweight sleeping bag, clothes, under garments, toiletries and other miscellaneous items. It was truly an exceptional "above and beyond" story! He lit up when I gave it to him on the day he was discharged. It was the most precious toothless smile I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. Moments like that make me beam with pride to be associated with such a thoughtful, compassionate, altruistic bunch.
