I recently had a long term patient that spent 70 plus days in the hospital battling for her life and unfortunately she lost the battle. The entire staff loved this patient and her passing was traumatic for us all. Shelby was her dayshift nurse the day she died. It was clear that she would not survive and the decision was made to reduce her level of support. Shelby took great care of the patient and her family that day. She was very compassionate and was instrumental in helping the family work through this difficult decision.
Shelby's shift ended at 7 pm but she stayed to help and comfort the family. The patient died a few hours later and Shelby continued to be there supporting the family and preparing the patient. She did not leave the hospital until 1 AM and had to drive an hour home.
Shelby was also there for me during this difficult night but also during the entire 70 days. It was not uncommon for her to send me (the MD) text messages letting me know of the patient's small victories. Shelby went above and beyond through the entire stay but especially on the last day of this patient's life. Her efforts are truly appreciated.
