Sarah had a patient who was a truck driver from out of state. She gave special attention to his needs just as she does all her patients, but today was extraordinary.

He was going to be discharge home to Texas. She, along with her new orientee, worked with the social worker to make the arrangements. She called and confirmed all of the times and wrote them down for him with phones numbers for his 2 day journey. He was to go from a cab, to a bus station, then transferring to several other buses, spending the night in a hotel, then finally taking another bus home. She asked him about the kind of snacks he liked and packed him a bag for the journey. She also contacted his Mother with the arrangements and schedule.

As she was leaving work, I noticed she was carrying a bag with the patient beside her. When I asked what she was doing she stated with a smile, "I am going to walk him down and stay with him until the cab gets here." This is nursing! I think she deserves this award due to all of her extra care toward this patient. She did not have to buy him snacks but she did. She did not have to walk him down and wait with him for the cab but she did. And she did not have to make all of those contacts confirming transportation but she did. She went above and beyond her duties to help this patient. He wanted me to "give her an award" so I am nominating her for the DAISY Award!
