Sarah was my nurse at Women and Babies Hospital in couplet care and we were so thankful to have her! This pregnancy was very special to our family. We had two miscarriages the year before and we were devastated. When we found out we were finally adding to our family, we felt so blessed! I was so excited to experience the birth of another one of our children. My first delivery experience with our older son was great! So naturally I thought this time was going to be exactly like that and I was so excited for those special memories. When we decided, after much discussion, to have a C-section this time I was terrified! I had no idea what to expect. The delivery and recovery experience was much different. By the time I got to the couplet care room I was feeling very sick and not like myself at all. That first day was a huge challenge for me. I felt incapable and like I was missing all those special memories. By the second day I was feeling very frustrated and that's when we met Sarah. When she first came into the room, she had this calming sense about her. She had the biggest smile on her face when she introduced herself and it made me feel at ease. She always made sure that her number was on the whiteboard so that if we needed to reach her we knew exactly how to do so. She took the time to listen to both my husband and I. We both felt like she was truly listening to the questions we were asking and involving us in my care. We felt like she cared about what we had to say and that we always had her undivided attention. She spent time with us and never rushed out of our room to go to the next. She made me feel appreciated, safe, and well taken care of. Even though I was still having trouble getting around it was comforting to know that we were working together one step at a time. The way she cared for our new baby was compassionate, gentle, and kind. He had to have his blood sugar checked frequently before he could eat. At the beginning of her shift, Sarah would check in with us and get an idea of when he would need to eat next. When we rang our call bell, she was there and able to check his sugar in a timely manner. She took her time and rarely had to stick him more than once to obtain the sample. It was apparent that she took pride in her work and wanted it done to the best of her ability. She even connected with our older son. He was so excited to be a big brother and she recognized that. She made him a 'big brother' hospital bracelet with sports stickers on it. He was so excited that he had a bracelet just like his Mommy, Daddy, and his baby brother! It truly touched my heart to see how caring and thoughtful one person could be towards someone else at a time when I felt very vulnerable. Sarah went above and beyond just being our nurse. She was a blessing to me and to my family during our stay there. Even though this birth experience was completely different and not what we had expected, there were new great memories that were made with the help of Sarah.
