Sara is a recent graduate and nurse in our department. She brings an excitement and positive energy everyday to the recovery room. Recently, Sara had a patient who was deaf, sight impaired and lived alone. Post operatively, the patient experienced breathing issues and required additional oxygen.

Preoperatively, the physicians felt his breathing issues were normal for this patient and were going to send him home after surgery. Sara took the time to investigate not only his medical history but his living situation as well. This patient was living alone in a home without a phone and far from a major roadway.

Not only did Sara have to convince the doctors of the patients needs for further observation but she had to convince the patient. Sara over several hours had developed a trusting relationship with this gentleman and he finally conceded to stay. "Just one night, young lady," he told Sara. This gentleman stayed over a week. It was determined the patient was in fluid overload and immediate dialysis was initiated. Because of Sara's concerns and persistence she made a difference in the gentleman's life.
