Sara was nominated for the DAISY Award by two different families of patients she cared for through Mercy Hospice. The following thoughts were shared by her nominators.
Family 1:
Sara was very compassionate. She took time to explain everything. She was gentle and caring when handling my father. Sara always stayed late when we needed her to and she offered support to me, my mom and brother.
Family 2:
"Form is the ultimate gift that love can offer. The vital union of necessity with all that we desire--all that we suffer."
Our dear mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer a little over a month ago and two wonderful women from your organization came to our rescue: Sara and Sheri. Sara, our nurse, was like an angel sent from heaven. She had the wisdom, courage, and strength to hold us all together at a time when we had lost our "form". While we wanted nothing more than to fall apart, it was her courage and presence that became our "ultimate gift". But even more important than all that she gave us, was the care and attention she bestowed upon our mother.
Mom lived her life with nothing but kindness for everyone - she was made of a special material that was always empathetic - especially to those less fortunate; and it was only fitting that she be repaid that kindness with a nurse like Sara. I think their bond was so close that my mother chose to leave this world, only when Sara had come for a visit. We will never forget the indelible image of Sara at our mother's bedside reading Revelations as she slipped loose upon the wind.
I think back now and only wonder how we could have ever made it through these past weeks without our Sara. And Sheri, our aid, gave an unfaltering presence of joy and peace and happiness in every visit that she made. We often wondered what unearthly force gave her such reconciliation and strength.
In an attempt to repay some measure of all that we received, we had all funeral gifts and memorials directed to your wonderful organization. Please thank Sara and Sheri for all they did. Our "all too human hearts" can never repay them for all they did.
