This summer has been a rough one on 4SE. 4SE has been left very short staffed. People have been helping out where they can, but it can be hard to keep a positive attitude when working more hours and short handed. Roseann Owen exemplifies not only a positive attitude when she's staying a couple extra hours, but goes out of her way to help out on the floor, where she can. This past week, she worked the floor as scheduled to do so, but when it came time to go home, she stayed to do a double rather than leave the floor short to return in the morning. She arrived the next day encouraging and ready to work. She is a wonderful example of a great, dedicated Nurse!

Reading about the DAISY award, there is one EXTRA-ordinary nurse that comes to mind. Now there are two parts to this award. One part, it "celebrates the extraordinary clinical skills and compassionate care given by nurses every day." The key word in this sentence is EVERYDAY. The second part of this is rewarding someone for this task. Someone who deserves this award is one who doesn't expect it. She is unbelievable humble, yet genuinely outgoing. She is hard working and compassionate. Most of all, she is consistently delivering tremendous care to all of her patients on a daily routine. She is not only tending to all the little details to a patient's plan of care, she greets and treats all of the doctors with utmost respect, but the biggest reason why she deserves this award is not because of her advocacy for her patients or respect with doctors, but she is the co-worker that everyone wishes to have.

Patients do not understand even a quarter of the things she does for them to make their stay not just in the hospital, but at LCMH more calm and efficient, but other nurses see it. She prepares tasks for the doctors and again, only other coworkers would be able to recognize the extra effort she puts forth. She is always more than willing to stay late or come early. Everything aforementioned is just a small part of why she deserves the DAISY award.

A few weeks back, in the break room right after change of shift report, I had one of the most important conversations about why I chose nursing as a career but it also proved her character. There comes a time period where morale on the floor can dip, and unfortunately it wears on people. People can complain and speak ill of floor specifically because of the workload. One rhetorical questions from Roseann was all it took to solidify my love for not only her, but nursing. "Is it wrong that I don't want to talk bad about this place? I still love where I work no matter how busy it gets and I love my job." That car ride home from that shift, I could not get that out of my brain. Someone who has been in the game for almost 30 years and they still love their job. She refuses to speak poorly about the place that has been home for such a long time. That should say a lot about her as a nurse and this place as an environment. She has chosen to stay here for 30 years goes without saying about her unconditional love for nursing and LCMH.

All it takes is one mentor to change your outlook on your job and Roseann does that day in and day out. How one person could be so selfless and compassionate, is probably what led her down to a nursing career, but it's her generous actions and genuine personality that have set her apart from others.
