Randy is an epitome of what "We Put Patients First" is all about. I have worked with Randy in CCU for more than 10 years now and he has consistently displayed a genuine concern, caring and compassionate attitude, empathy, and interest in his patients/families. Randy always wants the best care for his patients, both physically and emotionally. Hence, his interest in collaborating with other nurses on the unit, including myself, in the creation and development of “Patient Satisfaction Solutions Guide” - a guide with information aimed at helping nurses in the care and management of our critically ill patients - his input for the guide is greatly appreciated! Randy’s caring bedside manner is outstanding. His rapport with his patients/families is quite commendable! Randy has that special way of calming down even the most anxious patient or family.
For example, in July, we had a patient with a terminal cancer - transferred to our unit after she was coded and was experiencing imminent death. The family members were, understandably very devastated and could not believe what’s going to happen to their loved one. The patient's spouse was so emotionally deranged by the whole issue. There were cries and tears in the room and the emotions were quite high - the patient was young and that alone complicated the issue the more. Randy was the nurse taking care of the patient in that highly emotionally charged situation. Randy not only forfeited his lunch to take care of the patient and to make sure the family were alright, and to answer their questions and concerns, he also exhibited, as usual his excellent customer service, that the patients' spouse came and told me how great and helpful Randy was and stated that his words were very comforting.
That was not the first time I've had such a comment from family members. Randy has received numerous” Shining Star” cards from patients/families and was consistently praised for his caring attitude and concern for his patients. Some of the words they used to describe him are: Excellent, very professional, knowledgeable, focus, caring, compassionate, empathy. In fact, one pt. wrote on the card “He has it all - I would hire him anytime!"Randy is very knowledgeable - his knowledge is so versatile (from books to baseball!) I must say he's a staunch New York Yankees fan! - shares this experience with his patients when indicated. Randy is often seen educating his patients and families before, during, and after a test/procedure and their medications. He updates them on their condition and plan of care and efficiently intervenes when appropriate. Randy consistently makes sure that his patient’s family is comfortable when they visit, be it providing them with extra chair etc. He meticulously takes care of his patient and is a good team player.

His good nature does not stop with his patients - he extends it to his co-workers as well. For example, there was a time Randy was the charge nurse, the nurses were so busy taking care of the patients, that one could hardly sit down not to think of eating. Randy with his empathetic nature, sensed it and bought several boxes of Pizza for the staff- this was greatly appreciated by everyone both the nurses and the doctors. With all these qualities as indicated above and without any reservations, I recommend Randy Ryan for The DAISY Award!
