We had a patient come to the OB unit in active labor. The patient was put on the fetal monitor by the nurse. Rachel ran a 20 minute NST per protocol and quickly realized the baby appeared to be in some type of distress. Being the seasoned, experienced nurse that Rachel is, she did not hesitate to call the doctor and insist that he come to the hospital and deliver the baby. He did not question Rachel but listened and the patient was immediately prepped for a c-section. The physician arrived quickly and delivered the baby. The baby did require a lengthy resuscitation, but it did survive. According to the pediatrician, this baby was minutes from death. Due to the actions of this very experienced nurse, this baby was given a chance at life.
Rachel Horne demonstrates the qualities that everyone would like to have in a labor nurse. Her experience and rapport with the physicians is worth more than she could ever know.
