Our 17 year old son was hospitalized on the Women and Children’s Unit from December 30, 2011 thru January 5, 2012 due to injuries sustained while skiing at Killington. During his hospitalization, he received exemplary nursing care. While all of the WACU staff was wonderful, my family and I would like to commend two very special nurses, Barbara Coniglio and Peggy Stattel.
Barbara and Peggy exemplify what nursing is all about. Though their personalities are different, they complement each other. Barbara brings with her many years of on-hands nursing experience, while Peggy graduated with her BSN not that many years ago. Peggy’s dry sense of humor kept our son amused, and Barbara’s motherly demeanor provided comfort and assurance.
For the majority of his stay, he was fortunate to have continuity of nursing care; Peggy from 7AM – 7PM and Barbara from 7PM – 7AM. It was evident they demonstrated teamwork, as each was fully aware of his current condition and needs from the previous shift. Both nurses collaborated with Dr. Matt Zmurko and had the confidence to recommend a change in the plan of care, especially with pain management. During the New Year’s holiday, both ensured he received prompt tests, scans and therapy services when indicated.
The DAISY Award pays tribute to nurses who uphold current practice standards and exhibit dedication and compassion for their patients. Peggy and Barbara both exemplified on a daily basis the values of caring, integrity, safety and nursing excellence. Not only was their patient a recipient of these standards and values, but his parents were treated the same. We were moved by their compassionate care and impressed with their knowledge.
When time permitted, Peggy and Barbara shared personal experiences with their patient, which helped him cope with the magnitude of his injuries, while all along, maintaining their professionalism. Their practice of nursing is contagious. They should be used as role models and mentors to new generations of nurses.
As a State of CT, Dept. of Public Health nurse consultant and Federal CMS surveyor, I can appreciate their technical skills, the difficulty of their jobs and their level of dedication and effort.
Barbara and Peggy, you both are truly special nurses, worthy of our recognition and gratitude. You are the best of the best!
