Pam was one of the primary nurses for a patient we had in CCU who was on the ventilator but not going to be able to come off the ventilator. Once the patient understood this, the CCU staff did a lot with her children and her husband. Pam moved her to the chair daily as she was too weak to walk. The patient learned to text Pam on her phone when she needed something if Pam wasn't in the room, so she would text Pam when she had a question or needed anything. One of the things this patient communicated to Pam was that she would love to be able to see her daughter play a softball game. So Pam helped to get her daughter's softball game recorded so she was able to see her daughter play.
Today, we had our CVI kickoff and we had a vacant seat in the 6th floor auditorium which would have been where Pam would have otherwise been to celebrate this amazing adventure. Pam was at the softball game for her patient's daughter. You see her patient had passed away just a few months ago and Pam was her presence today for her daughter. Her husband was so moved by the gesture that he went through channels to nominate her for the Healthcare with a Human Touch Award this year.
This is the nurse that never forgets her impact and she is a truly exceptional human being. This level of compassion commitment and care is the type of candidate worthy of this caliber of the DAISY Award. Pam makes you proud to be a part of Carilion.
