We first met Nicole on the orthopedic floor after admission from the ER. With my husband suffering from a spinal cord injury and a broken nose, Nicole knew exactly what to do for him, both physically and emotionally. Being eight hours away from home in a "foreign land," she ministered to both of us.
Since the only way we could travel back to a rehab center in Georgia was by medical air transport, the process of fitting all the pieces of rehab admission, insurance approval, and medical transport was a tedious process. When we learned that it could be days before transport, I had a little meltdown. I was going to have to give up my room at the nearby Marriott, as our car and dog were being driven back to Georgia. There were no vacancies in the Hurst Hospitality House, and I was overwhelmed with the thought of at least four days of 24-hour hospital living. That was when my angel appeared and, without hesitation, Nicole offered me her car. She said they had an extra car, and I was welcome to keep it as I needed it to drive from hospital to hotel.
As it turned out, I was able to hold on to my car one more day and I didn't need to take Nicole up on her generous offer. I told Nicole that I have been the recipient of many acts of kindness in my lifetime, but her unselfish offer to me, someone she had known only a few days, is by far the kindest. I am so very grateful that she came into our lives at a time we really needed her.
