Nancy is the educator on the medical/pulmonary unit. She has developed an orientation program for the participants on the DLU. She is currently working with the other medical/surgical units to assist them in fine-tuning their own development to enhance orientation for new employees moving to their home unit from the DLU. All of her interactions with staff are professional, and staff feel very comfortable addressing educational needs or challenges on the unit. When we had an issue with a PCA pump, she identified the problem, completed research, and then taught all staff how to assist in the future when using the PCA. Nancy's kind, compassionate approach to learning and training has contributed to the success of the DLU. She has developed an orientation program which includes hands-on working with a preceptor. Nancy also developed an equipment/task day working in the learning center, improving the new orientees confidence with new equipment. She has been asked to assist other units with educator needs, and she assists with general nursing orientation as well as orientation development.
I spoke with Nancy about the need to have a medical/surgical certification review class for staff on our unit. We set the dates and without any assistance from me, she developed the curriculum, objectives, and learning tools for the class. Nancy is always a positive leader and role model for all staff on the unit.
