Melissa was caring for a 100-year-old patient that was deaf, and had a difficult time communicating with others. It certainly took a good amount of time to explain what is going on, and the plan for care. In Observation, time is of the essence, and many times RNs cannot sit down with their patients. Melissa didn't care that she was busy. She took the time to communicate with this patient, make her comfortable, and helped her to feel human. I just kept hearing the patient mumble to Melissa, "I love you." Whenever this patient had a question, maybe didn't want blood pressure cuff on, Melissa would lean in and listen to the patient. Sometimes, the patient had to repeat herself, but Melissa understood. I watched Melissa stand there and hold the patients hand while talking with her. This was a perfect example of true, compassionate care, something that Melissa exhibits every day. We are lucky to have a nurse like Melissa in our presence.
