I am nominating Matt Faust for the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses since he is one of two nurses on 4Chi who will always remain in my mind as outstanding during a stay experienced by my mother-in-law which required me and my sister-in-law to remain at the hospital at her bedside for three days, 24/7.
Matt showed a level of compassion and attention to detail. He was kind, courteous and very focused on the needs of the patient. Mom was elderly, frail, had Parkinson's Disease and was here as a result of a fall which caused a brain bleed. For a number of reasons, it was not possible for her to have a catheter. As a result, time and time again, sometimes in very short sequence, Mom needed the assistance of staff for voiding purposes. Matt never said anything negative, never referred to the fact that this was something he had just done in the last 20 minutes, and just very professionally and cheerfully took care of the patient's needs.
He was always suggesting something to make her more comfortable or asking what else he could do for her. Sometimes her responses were slow and laborious, but he was always very patient. He also focused on her pain level, checking often, and asking her for a level between 1-10 and then acting accordingly. Every time he had to physically attend to her, or give medications, he would always tell her what he was going to be doing and why. He was very gentle with her.
We stayed at her bedside through the night and he was just as focused on keeping us comfortable as he was on the patient. He always went out of his way to see if there was anything he could do for us or anything he could get us. He encouraged us to just let him know if there was anything we needed or wanted.
Matt had a way of calming us just through his actions and reactions. He took some of the tenseness out of the situation with his words and ways. He is very good at what he does.
