Marcie is an excellent clinician, one of the best I have in SICU. She is a charge nurse and preceptor also. What sets her apart from other nurses is her personality. You will not meet one person who has anything bad to say about her. She knows everyone on a first name basis. I always see residents and even staff doctors with a big smile when they walk into the unit and see her and she always has a big hug for them. That's special especially in a stressful hospital situation. She has the same greeting for her peers. She is extremely helpful in the unit and I for one, know I am going to have a good day at work when she is on even when she is not in charge. But even more is the relationship she has with her patients. You can have a patient who is having an awful day and by the end of the day with Marcie they are smiling and laughing. I am always observing families seeking her out before they leave to give her a hug and thank her. She has exchanged numbers with several of her patients family and has gotten updates from them.

I think she is a prime example of what nursing is or should be. A combination of science and intelligence mixed in with compassion, empathy and love. She really has a good heart.

I wanted to let you know about something that I saw that you should know about. We had a kid in our unit, I can't remember how old but less than 20 years old. The kid had a bolt in his head. Our nurse was taking care of the kid and turns out he is an Alabama fan. The nurse caring for him gave this kid an Alabama visor, so he could wear it with the bolt in his head. I also just saw her walking to the second floor with an Alabama football jersey to give to him. I know as a father, if my son was enduring this, it would bring tears to my eyes for someone to go out of their way to do something like this. Any comfort or kindness shown to my child is felt double by me. I think she should be recognized for this.
