My grandson, M, was born at VCU, a healthy 8lb 14oz boy. My daughter chose to breast feed and was well supported through classes and lactation services. About one month after his birth, my daughter began to experience pain when she nursed. When I shared this in passing with the Nurse Manager of the Pediatric Primary Care, she encouraged me to page Lisa Ripp.
Lisa quickly returned my call and within a few moments of my describing the situation, she offered to see my daughter and grandson later that day in the Lactation Clinic. Lisa's assessment skills were immediately apparent through her line of questioning. When it was decided that my grandson would need a procedure, Lisa explained the entire process, insured the physician completed the consent, spoke to the medical student about the process and with the utmost gentleness prepared my grandson. I watched as she continually scanned the room to ensure every participant was prepared. She made sure to check on her second patient - my daughter - too.
Once that the procedure was complete, Lisa watched as my daughter breast fed her son. She again assessed the situation, provided clear directions and guidance and offered kind words of encouragement. Even though it was obvious she had other demands on her time, Lisa never made us feel rushed.
We are forever grateful for her assistance, expertise and compassionate care.
