My 94-year-old mother was a patient in St. Luke’s for 12 days. Most of this time she was in the 9th floor neuroscience department. My mother had fallen and suffered catastrophic injuries. In time, it became apparent she would not survive these injuries, and the heart-wrenching decision was made to cease medical intervention and instead keep her comfortable until she died. Lindsey was our day nurse for many of these days. Lindsey embodies the qualities of what I consider an ideal nurse: knowledgeable, capable, efficient, and most importantly compassionate. Each day I witnessed her deep kindness in all of her interactions with my mother—her every movement, from adjusting the sheets to taking my mother’s vitals, displayed tenderness and respect. These compassionate actions brought much comfort to my family. I think my mother was likely aware on some level that she was in the capable hands of a kind, gentle spirit (much like her own).
