We have a pediatric patient, S who is 6 years old. She started on hemodialysis and then was to transition to peritoneal dialysis. Lavon has taken care of her with both modalities and done an extraordinary job. Recently, S's Tenckhoff catheter had to be removed due to it not functioning correctly. She had a couple of weeks doing hemo before attempting a new Tenckhoff. She and Lavon have a great relationship and she trusts Lavon. Whenever Lavon is assigned to S for her hemo treatment Lavon carries her to our stand-up scales which are located at the nurse's station and announces "Everyone say hello to the princess!!" This makes S beam with laughter and joy. This brings a smile to the nurses' faces as well as little S.
She was holding her arms out to Lavon. Lavon asked S if she wanted her to hold her. S nodded yes. After S's new PD catheter was placed, she was in extreme pain due to the surgery. She, unfortunately, had to receive a hemo treatment after OR and was crying while her dialysis was being performed. Lavon called the doctor and pleaded with them to order her something stronger for pain. The physicians did order a stronger pain med and S was a little more comfortable during her treatment. However, after this wore off she was again crying in pain. Lavon asked S if she wanted her to hold her. S nodded yes. Lavon picked her up and sat and rocked her for the rest of her dialysis treatment to get her thru it.
S had quite a bit of fluid on due to her surgery and Lavon knew she needed to get S through her treatment for her to feel her best. I walked in S's room and saw Lavon holding S and rocking her while she sat in a chair in front of the dialysis machine. S was sound asleep. S's Mom was lying in a recliner sound asleep also, as Lavon had made her as comfortable as she could due to her mom being pregnant and getting hardly any sleep because of her daughter's condition. S was able to finish her treatment and got all the fluid off she needed thanks to Lavon's compassion and love for this little girl. She is such a joy for all the nurses but especially to Lavon.
