At 60 years old, I had never had a stay in a hospital for surgery. Lauren was my nurse when I first arrived and was waiting for surgery, as well as my day nurse for a couple of days. After surgery she immediately helped me to relax by explaining everything to me, having a pleasant and caring attitude, and being utterly competent. Lauren helped me to be comfortable with the knowledge I needed and things I had to discuss such as test results and bowel movements. She was always readily available with her pleasant smile and manner whenever I needed her.

On Lauren's first day off of orientation she had a very tough case. We had a young gentleman who was here because he was hit in the eye with a softball. The physician came by at 10:00AM and stated that the patient was cleared to go home after being seen by a specialist.
Lauren did her due diligence and called the specialist throughout the shift to see what time they would be able to come by. They kept pushing her off and then finally stated that they would be in around 4:00PM.
By 3:00PM, the patient and family were anxious and had been waiting all day just to see the specialist knowing full well that the money was racking up. Lauren had used her compassionate care and was in constant communication with the family throughout the shift explaining to them everything that she was doing which helped tremendously to diffuse the situation.
At 3:30PM Lauren received word from the specialist that she was not coming anymore and that the patient could just be discharged and see her tomorrow. Lauren formulated a plan with our Kaiser partner and was able to get the patient an appointment at the Rock Creek Kaiser (next to hospital). By this time, it was 4:00PM and the appointment was set for 4:45PM.
Lauren worked and coordinated with the entire team, the MD, PA, Case Management and Unit Secretary, and they were able to get all the discharge paperwork and instructions completed in record breaking time. We packed and dressed the patient and Lauren wheeled the patient over to Rock Creek and they were able to make the appointment.
Lauren did great work in keeping the patient at the center of all we do. She was the patient's advocate and ensured the patient had a safe discharge. The patient and family were thankful and appreciative for what Lauren accomplished that day. We are so proud to have her on our team!
