An 88-year-old mildly confused gentleman wandered into cardiac rehab and started speaking to Lauren. He was not currently a patient, nor did he have an appointment with cardiac rehab. After speaking to him for a little bit, she learned that he had recently been a patient at SMH for cardiac stent placement and placement of a percutaneous drain for cholecystitis to be left in for 6 weeks. Apparently, the patient had declined rehab at SMH and went home, he was discharged with Home Health. Home Health went to his home and refused to treat him as they deemed his home situation "unsafe".
With permission from the patient, Lauren worked with Angie from Social Services to place the patient at Health South, to get him the appropriate care. She fed the patient and ensured he had plenty of fluid to drink since she noted he had not voided after being in her presence for several hours. The gentleman remained with her until the end of her shift, at which point she brought him to my watch until transport arrived to take him to Health South.
The care and concern she gave this man was unsurpassed since he wasn't even a patient of hers. Her dedication should be commended, and makes me proud to have a nurse like her working within our hospital. I believe she is a fine example of a DAISY Nurse, since she proved to be not only an extraordinary RN but an extraordinary human being!
