My dad came into the ER with symptoms of a stroke and we were admitted to unit 42 - Kim Sedlak was our nurse. This was when deficits were becoming more noticeable. She took the time out of her busy day to walk with my dad and me to see how he was doing and document it. When my dad needed someone physically, emotionally, and spiritually she was the one that ran to our rescue.
We sat at the end of the hall to look out the window to help my dad from becoming depressed and for a change of scenery. He then began to break down and cry because he knew that he was slower and his memory was gone. He was worried people did not believe him since he had some improvement and although appropriate, he was still not him. Kim took the time to explain strokes, symptoms, changes, recovery and to never downplay anything he felt was important.
She was caring, knowledgeable, and compassionate in our time of need. She gave my father the ability to release his fears and find some peace that he had someone in his corner and took the time to worry about him as a person and not just a patient. My dad who does not get emotional and talk emotions, who is sassy and loud, was now quiet and meek, but the trust he had in her gave me a second glimpse of my dad before the stroke.
I will never be able to thank her or repay her for what she did for my dad and me that day. Thanks to Kim this terrible thing is just a little easier to handle and understand!
