Kelly McMurtrey has always been a great nurse with a wonderful bedside manner but the role that she plays over at the Foundation Clinic as an RN, a nurse navigator, and a patient educator is just beyond what a paragraph could ever describe. Sitting in the office watching Kelly work with the Portsmouth community, educating patients on their disease process and disease management made me realize how many times patients need continuing care to really reach their healthcare goals. I always think that every time I discharge a patient from the ED that I wished I had more time to sit with them and educate them on various topics. However, knowing that many of these patients will follow up with the team at the Foundation Clinic and with Kelly being there eases my mind.

Kelly has made me realize what a difference one nurse can make for a whole community of people. I have seen patients actually come into her office just to say hello. She spends a great deal of her time educating diabetics on how to efficiently manage their blood sugars and has patients follow up with her weekly to go over a dietary log that shows her their daily food intake and blood sugars. Some of these patients are so proud of their logs that you can see them just beam with joy because they know that Kelly is going to be so proud of them for how well they did managing their blood sugars.

The one thing that I will not forget and bring with me everywhere I go is the sight of a grown man actually tearing up thanking Kelly for caring so much about him. He just kept saying that he had never had anyone take the time to help him the way she has and he stated that he literally gets "on his knees every day to thank God that Kelly came into his life." What an amazing asset the Maryview Foundation is to the Portsmouth community and so is everyone who is a part of that team. I hope that one day I can have the impact on my patients, even just one, which Kelly has shown to have on a whole community. This is something I will strive to achieve for the rest of my nursing career.
