I remember the doctors coming into our hospital room and saying they needed to take the baby now as an emergency C-section. My baby was only one pound and thirteen ounces. I remember being taken to the NICU for the first time and seeing her tiny toes and hands. Wow, I thought to myself, we have a long road ahead of us!

Then I met our nurse. She was always in our room taking care of my baby when I would visit or when I would call in. Her name was Kay Hurst. I became very dependent on Kay. If she had a day off, I was a basket case without her. She knew everything about my baby, and taught me how to hold her and how to feed her. She knew when she was having a good day or a bad day. She knew when she was ready to go home and how I did not think I was ready to take her home. We stayed with Kay for 83 days!

Kay made scrapbook pages for us of our baby’s milestones at three pounds, four pounds, five pounds and so on. If she had not done this, I would not have had time to make them myself. Kay is now a part of our family and always will be.

My daughter is now 6 months old and we have every intention of inviting Kay to birthday parties to celebrate our daughter!

How can I ever thank Kay enough for helping save my daughter’s life?
