Katalin Horvath, BSN, RN, has been a part of the Children's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) team for the past 20 years. Since becoming a nurse in 1999 she has embraced ownership in delivering genuine care and compassion to the bedside. Over the years, Katalin has grown into a well-respected informal leader in the NICU. As a highly experienced nurse, she brings strong clinical judgment to the bedside. She also holds a unique talent: during the most difficult times families are faced with, Katalin is the "go-to" resource person. She commits to providing a calming environment to patients and families, especially during their unpredictable journey.
Katalin goes above and beyond to help create memories with the families. This has included foot and hand molds or prints, pictures and baptisms or just offering a listening ear to listen. She is also a vital resource to her peers during bereavement care and after. She mentors staff in supporting families and also recognizes grief experienced by the caregiver. She often gives her personal time to assure that a staff member feels acknowledged and is able to share their feelings of grief through conversation.
Katalin embodies the Children's values. She recognizes the importance of primary care nursing and builds integrity with families through partnership, and by educating and supporting them. She advocates for her patients and works to maintain positive relationships with families. Katalin's willingness to collaborate without being asked shows how she is embedded in the bigger team. She provided input during the development of an innovative, comfortable bereavement space for families experiencing the devastating loss of their baby, and contributed greatly to formal education for nurses during NICU Training Days in 2015.
Katalin's contributions and commitment to what she is passionate about is always present. She brings expert knowledge and families connect with her in a way that brings them comfort. Because of this her peers see her as a resource. Her talent is immeasurable and her team is proud to call her a coworker, awesome nurse and friend.
