Karen has been a nurse at CHOC for about 5 years. She began her tenure as a staff RN then quickly moved up to a charge nurse. In that role Karen was an amazing patient/family advocate while maintaining positive communication with both families and staff. Karen has since moved on to be the Oncology Interim clinical education and now our permanent clinical educator. Karen has contined to mentor all staff including our RN residents with care, compassion, expertise and a great big knowledge base while upholding the highest values. Karen makes you want to succeed!!! Since Karen stepped into the Interim clinical educator position the knowledge base of our staff has "blown through the roof". She is constantly introducing new concepts, innovative ideas and suggestions on how to either make our jobs a bit easier or show us another way to do what we do. She is ALWAYS available for questions, answers and most of all support. She has kept all of our staff involved in what is going on in education and educational opportunities through emails, flyers and most personally through word of mouth. We are updated physically and visually. She is an amazing resourse and always seems to know what our needs are before we even know. She is an integral part of the Hematology/Oncology team and has demonstrated excellent rapport and working relations with the staff and MD's. She accompanies the staff to the bedside when there is either something new or the nurse seem unfamiliar and needs assistance, i.e. J-tip education. She is CPON certified, a member of APHON and is a strong advocate of these organizations, while just recently completing her BSN. Karen deserves this award for her continual advancements, collaboration, excellence and assistance. She is more than a colleague, she is a leader and I cherish being her follower!!
