Julie was the first nurse to really hear what we were trying to accomplish with my mother's care as an Alzheimer's patient in the hospital. Lack of sleep with a patient like A, makes it more difficult to focus and communicate. A was kept in a bed for two days. Her walking and toileting skills were slipping away while treating her two blood clots and UTI. With Julie's help, she ordered a commode to be used first thing the next morning. Assessment of Mom's walking and toileting was accomplished. Julie was the only nurse to change my mother's bed position to prevent bed sores. She took the initiative to blend the magnesium into prune juice, so it was received with a smile and taken within 5 min vs 15. Julie could foresee a need, for example, the room's clock was not working. She took the clock off the wall, and she replaced the batteries.
All these steps may look like obvious little tasks, however, from a daughter/care giver's perspective, Julie's faithfulness in her care, her kind words of encouragement, her patience with an Alzheimer's woman, and loving spirit is priceless. She balanced working with others' needs; my mother's daily changing needs of catheterizing vs toileting. She was flexible, but respectful of hospital policy.
Julie deserves the DAISY Award because she continually goes above and beyond in the care for her new found residents and turns them into friends that respect, love, and appreciate all she does on an hourly basis. My mother would even say, "You are beautiful." That's my mother's way of communicating that "You are greatly appreciated, and I see your loving care, Thank You Julie."
