She is a quiet, compassionate and knowledgeable nurse. She never complains. Is always compassionate to her patients and she makes compassion seem effortless. Having worked alongside of her, I have watched her give herself to her patients, so many times, while managing the patients’ medical care thoroughly and with great attention to detail. She has had some hardships in her life, heart breaks. However, never once did I ever see her display that at the bedside. She is calm and caring. She listens to her patients. Due to her effortless compassion, passion for her patients and their families, and her dedication to nursing, we are honored to name Joanna Pytel as this quarter’s DAISY Honoree. Here’s her story:
The ED had a pediatric trauma. Once the radio report was received, Joanna and her team of nurses scurried as they prepared the trauma room. The adrenaline builds. The room becomes quiet. The chaos begins. She maintains her calm demeanor, while maintaining a level critical thinking mind, attempting to save this patient’s life. Unfortunately, the injuries are too severe and we are unable to resuscitate the patient.
Joanna’s calmness brings peace to the room, instead of adding to the anxiety. As we prepare the young patients body to be viewed by the family, Joanna took his hands and began to wash the blood stained hands. She said to us, “I have to make sure his hands are clean so his mother can hold them one last time.” As a mother, her words touched my heart, tears filled my eyes, and I realized how important this was.
Once we finished, the parents arrived at the bedside. The first thing the mother did was grab her son’s hand and kiss it. She laid her head on his hand as tears rolled down her face onto his hand. Joanna was right. It was important that his hands were cleansed. She was not afraid to touch him. Joanna showed her love one last time.
So, I commend Joanna for her devoted passion to her patient, which she extends to their families. Her holistic nursing care is endearing and admirable. Joanna has truly ‘blossomed’ into a beautiful nursing DAISY!
