... I can testify firsthand about the quality of care that Jessica Hatem gives her patients and their families...because Jessica was my mom's nurse on the day that she passed away. My mother had been fighting an uphill battle with AML and had spent most of the year at The James with complications related to her illness. Although all of the care that she received was excellent, it was her last day with us that her excellent nursing care will remain with me. My mom had been transferred to 8WRH after being intubated with her diagnosis of ARDS. She spent almost 2 weeks there and unfortunately her tired body was tired of fighting. On August 7th, after having an in-depth conversation with the critical care team, I knew that my Mom did not want long term ventilation--as she preferred quality of life over quantity. We changed her code status to a DNRCC and made arrangements with our family out of state to come to the hospital--as Mom's wish was to see all of her siblings before she passed.

As soon as her code status was changed, Jessica made it her priority to make sure that my Mom was comfortable. She quickly removed SCD's, NG tube and other PIV's that weren't being used. She logged onto the computer in the room and brought up her own Pandora account and picked Motown--a playlist that Mom chose. She swabbed Mom's mouth with Sprite---she was happy to finally taste something after 2 weeks of being NPO. She frequently checked on us and attended to our needs as a family, as well as my Mom's. She wouldn't allow me to help with turns and repositioning. She quietly told me that I was "the daughter now, not the nurse" as she walked away to get help. Towards the end, she asked for my opinion making sure that I felt like my Mom was comfortable and without pain. Jessica showed true compassion and caring. She stayed in the room, listening to life stories that other members of my family shared with her.

She truly was an outstanding nurse on a very heartbreaking day in my life. I will never forget her for the excellent care that she gave my Mom on her last day with us.
