When I was brought into the ER via ambulance I was a bit frustrated. I fell at my daughter's house and everyone kept "insisting" I had hurt my hip despite the fact that my leg was what was causing me tremendous pain. Jenny was my ER nurse. She came in and did a thorough and efficient assessment all the while talking to me and listening to me. The emphasis here is on "listening". I felt like Jenny really listened to me and really cared that I got the best possible treatment quickly. She positioned me to be as comfortable as possible. Despite the fact that the ER was very busy, she was sure to check in on me every 10-20 minutes while I was waiting for x-ray and the doctor. She was kind, cheerful and compassionate and would reassure me with a touch on my shoulder that it would be ok. Once a diagnosis was given, she explained the pain management and discharge instructions in a clear and understandable manner.

I think the original plan was to send me home and let me "suffer" through the night. I talked to Jenny about how I didn't know how I was going to sleep that night and asked if there was some kind of a brace or something I could have to keep my leg immobile. She checked with the doctor and within minutes, was back with a brace that she tenderly put on and which seemed to help right away.

Upon release from the ER, Jenny took me to our vehicle in a wheelchair, all the while reassuring me that I could call back if the pain was too much for me to bear or if I had any questions or concerns. She reminded me to call for a follow-up appointment with my doctor the next day and kidded with me that she "was going to check to be sure I did that."

My daughter, who has been a nurse for several years, was in the ER with me. She even commented on Jenny's kindness, compassion and professionalism in dealing with me. Although my daughter works in a NICU and isn't so familiar with the care of adults, she said she feels like I had the best possible nurse ever! That's a real compliment in my book!

Jenny is the epitome of what an ER nurse should be. Although she worked quickly and efficiently the entire time, she never lost sight of the fact that I was a patient and in pain. I continually felt like I was her main concern at every moment I was in the ER. Her kindness and compassion shined through as did her smile and caring attitude.
