Every time I work with Jennifer Vuich, she exhibits exceptional compassion and empathy, as well as exceptional clinical skill, for every patient she cares for. The care that she gave this patient this day I thought really exemplified the compassionate nurse that she is.

On a busy weekend, a gentleman was brought by his neighbor to the hospital. She was concerned about his declining health. Aside from his symptoms, he appeared very unkempt. He explained that he hasn't been well enough to care for himself. His hair was long and matted on the ends. His beard was long, discolored and matted. He apologized for his appearance, stating he normally keeps his hair shoulder-length, and his beard closer to his face. When asked when he last showered, he stated it had been over a week.

With bath supplies and a pair of scissors in hand, Jen asked her tech if she would help her and she agreed. They bathed the patient. With the patient's permission Jen trimmed his hair and beard. He was grateful, and his personality immediately brightened.

When his neighbor returned to the room, she grabbed Jen, hugged her, and kissed her on the cheek. She said, "I couldn't be happier. This man spends his life caring for and helping everyone in our neighborhood. I am grateful to you both for taking care of him and giving him the care he deserves."

I asked her about the experience. She said when it is busy, it is so easy to get caught up in task oriented care. We often forget that taking the time to care for the human spirit can really make the difference.
