Last year at this time, my son was admitted to the PICU in cardiogenic shock. ALL of the nurses and staff were amazing and deserve praise and gratitude! Jenae, however, took care of him a lot. My son, as all of the PICU children are, was very sick. When Jenae was working, she took amazing, wonderful care of him. I knew that when I saw that she was his nurse in the morning, it was going to be a good day. (Well, as good as it can get when your child is in a fragile state of health.) Jenae took care of him with tenderness, care and love. Her compassion and empathy definitely showed through the care that she provided him. This was evident in the way she always had him clean and presentable.

I remember his ET tape would get smelly and she never hesitated to change it, and on her own initiative. She was always bathing him, regardless if it was her "duty" or not. I didn't have to ask her once. I know this is such a simple thing, but as a parent it meant so much to me! Aside from always keeping him clean and comfortable, she was on top of things.

If a bb came back abnormal, if something in his status changed, she was on it! I trusted her professional judgment! If I/we had a concern or question, she would patiently answer it. And if she couldn't, she used her resources to address it. Furthermore, if we had discussed something prior to rounds and I forgot to ask, she would always remember to ask the team.

Another example of the wonderful care she provided was that she was the first person to ask how to pronounce his name correctly! She then told everyone how to pronounce it, even the docs and everyone else involved in his care! If someone pronounced it wrong, she corrected them! It seems like such a small thing, but it meant so much to my husband and me.

I would absolutely love for Jenae to receive the DAISY Award for the month of July. July is a special month for my and family, as July 14th marks the one-year anniversary for his heart transplant! Jenae was there the entire time, and even before his transplant hospitalization, as he was in and out of the PICU leading up to transplant. Just the fact that we are nominating her a year after should show how much we appreciated her and the amazing care she provided!
