Jeff Redican, RN is the quintessence of the compassionate, skilled professional nurse who is the model for receiving the DAISY Award. He shares his skills and knowledge with his peers as well as through a mentoring role as a preceptor to new nurses. He remains calm and even keeled even in the most stressful, chaotic situations. He demonstrates his caring on a daily basis but there is one recent instance that I think describes Jeff’s compassionate manner best.
A very ill appearing young man was rushed into the Emergency Department by his uncle who ran in through the ambulance entrance shouting for help. The chaplain took the uncle to the Family Room to provide support to him and we scooped the patient out of the wheel chair and onto a cart and began removing his clothes, applying monitoring devices, and initiating procedures to stabilize his condition, diagnose and begin treatment. It was apparent though, that the man was septic.
Jeff had already sprung into action, preparing what was needed for intubation, gathering supplies and starting two IVs, administering the needed medications, inserting a Foley catheter, all the while speaking conversationally to the man to reassure and comfort him. Jeff bathed him because in his toxic state the man had lost control of his bodily functions, with Jeff reassuring him that he was going to make him feel better and comfortable. I checked on Jeff a few times to see if he needed help, but he said, No, we’re doing fine, speaking about the patient and himself as a team because the man was still wanting to help turn himself and position for being cleaned up. Within a very short time, the man’s vital sign were stabilized, he was breathing with the assistance of a ventilator, and was settled comfortably in clean sheets and a patient gown. His uncle was brought back to the room after being updated on his condition.
Such actions by Jeff are part of his daily routine. He passes no judgment, looks at the here and now of the patient’s condition and determines what he needs to do in the best interest of his patients. Through demonstration of clinical judgment and compassionate care, Jeff Redican, RN is a fitting recipient for the DAISY Award.
