The first thing that struck me about Jean is that she is a change agent. The job of a change agent is to assist people in understanding why change is needed and more importantly, understand how it benefits them. For transformational change to happen, everyone must understand what benefits are available to them as a result of changing. Judgement and finger pointing are not in a change agent's DNA. Rather, a change agent must be an active listener and a persistent messenger and provide assistance to those around them to help the change occur. Jean Howse, RN has personified this definition in her character, her words, and her actions. Over and over again, I have witnessed Jean in conversations with her peers; reeling them in, calming their fears and pointing them in a positive direction.
The work ethic consistently demonstrated by Jean is one to be aspired too. If there is one thing that the newer generation nurse can learn from Jean, it is that work as a nurse is about compassion for others, a duty to serve, and a devotion to one's community. To round out Jean as an absolutely wonderful nurse and person…she has a great sense of humor. She is downright funny! Jean has the ability to interject fun into the day and to diffuse stressful situations with her wit.

"From the first time I met Jean, I realized what a champion for patients and the nursing profession she was. She expected quality patient care to be delivered to all patients, all the time. I have witnessed Jean encourage, support, and build up not just nursing staff but everyone she works with. Jean has a heart of gold and will help anyone in need. I count it a blessing to have had the opportunity to work alongside Jean and learn many valuable lessons."

"Jean consistently provides excellent patient care and is a leader among her old and new co-workers. Jean is someone that I knew immediately I wanted to earn respect from. Now she is the one who encourages and reassures me. She is the nurse every director prays for and she has blessed me and 4 North."
