When I couldn't hear the patient on the call light, I knew that he might be notifying us he was having a seizure-like episode. So I called James (his nurse) on my way to the patient's room.

James was already in there as he had been sitting outside the patient's room all night waiting and ready in the event of one of these episodes. The patient, a grown male, was very emotional, crying in frustration and having difficulty speaking. James was so calm, comforting and reassuring; it almost brought tears to my eyes. We both did our best to calm him and talk him through it. The patient kept trying to speak but couldn't. Slowly his speech came back but was difficult to understand. But I knew what he was saying to James, "Thank you."

Yes, thank you, James, for being a wonderful and compassionate nurse. I know this patient appreciated it and I did, too.
