On 5 East Guadalupe is nicknamed "Guadapedia" because of her clinical knowledge. There is no task that she cannot accomplish, or is not willing to perform. She is able to explain each clinical task to her patients so they are informed of their care. I have heard from numerous patients that they feel so much better knowing why something is being done, and that they feel safe have a nurse with the knowledge that Guadalupe possesses.
I remember one patient really wanted to shower but felt he would not be able to because of all the tubes and wires he was connected to. Guadalupe told the patient that anyone can shower if they want to. She clamped whatever could be clamped, covered up IV's, and assisted the patient to a shower chair in the shower. She helped him, getting a little wet in the process, but never complained. In the end the patient stated that he felt 100% better and was very appreciative of Guadalupe's efforts. Every day, and every shift Guadalupe goes above and beyond for her patients, believing they can all get better. She does not mind the "extra work" that some care might require because she truly wants to see her patients get better.
Guadalupe has a lot going on outside of work, but continues to work her three shifts, stay active in hospital wide committees, and 5 East projects such as skills day, the nurse week banner, and Habitat For Humanity.
Guadalupe is currently finishing the DNP program at the University of Arizona. There are a number of nursing students on her unit and she is always willing to educate and guide them as they become nurses themselves. She sets the bar high for herself, and others, but believes we are all capable of achieving the best possible outcomes for ourselves and our patients. What makes Guadalupe special is that she is great every day, every shift, and with every patient.
