I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in June. It was a life-altering medical situation that my family and I have faced together. The Watertown Center for Women's health is where I go to my doctor. I have had mammograms there for the past 10 years so when this year's mammogram showed there was an irregularity, I felt the need for an immediate biopsy. I was very upset and was brought into the nurse navigator's office. This is when I was introduced to the most compassionate, thorough, comforting, and loyal medical care person I have ever met-Gretchen Klug.
Gretchen reassured me that I was not alone, that she would be by my side every step of the way and that she would take care of setting up everything that needed to be done medically. She literally held my hand through my diagnosis, through each doctor's visit and even through each of my biopsies. I had her cell phone number and had to call after hours several times for explanations and reassurance. When it came time to have a second opinion, Gretchen took the time and made arrangements to ensure that I was going to be in the best care for my needs.
Due to the nature of my cancer, UW-Madison Hospital proved to be the best choice for my future care. That hole in my heart without Gretchen physically by my side at the appointments, after hours, and throughout my three surgeries was real.
In conclusion, I am thrilled that there is an award to recognize nurses. Good nurses not only ease the physical pain for their patients, but they also provide emotional support, reassurance, and hope. Some even impact a patient's life well after surgery. Gretchen is the epitome of what a health care provider should be. Watertown Center for Women's Health is truly blessed to have her on its staff. I only wish we could clone Gretchen Klug so she could be present at every health care facility.
