We had a patient that we had to intubate who had no family members who we could call to take care of his cat that he was worried about. As soon as we were able to wean his sedation off he asked if someone could take care of his cat. When we found out about the cat no one had been to the patient's house in over a week. One of our night RN's in ICU Erin Rademan took it upon herself to go once a week on her day off to feed and water the cat and clean it's litter box. This patient has no running water so Erin has to buy water and bring it in with her when she waters the cat.
We as Erin's co-workers were all very impressed when we found out about this through the patient asking if the nurse who was taking care of his cat was around. Erin did this out of the kindness of her heart and was trying to downplay this sincere, heartfelt act. This was what we felt went above and beyond and represented St Mary's mission. Two months later, Erin is still taking care of this cat for the patient. We would like to recognize Erin for her wonderful kindness to another person.
