Recently a patient was admitted to CVSU with severe fluctuations in his blood pressure. Every time we would get him up or even sit him up he would literally pass out. The diagnosis was severe dehydration and medication reaction. Emily assumed care for this patient and would relentlessly advocate on behalf of him and his wife.

Using her knowledge and experience, she questioned orders, made suggestions and persistently called physicians with all the subtle changes in his status. She insisted that additional consults were needed and would re-tell, in great detail, the patient's hospital course. After three days, the patient experienced severe mental status changes. His wife was distraught and fearful for her husband's life. Emily calmed her reassured her and kept her informed every step of the way.

When others dismissed her concerns, she didn't stop. Finally, after days of her persistence, it was discovered that the patient had a rare adrenal mass called a pheochromocytoma, a treatable condition. The patient and his wife would tell everyone how Emily saved his life and would never give up on finding answers when he couldn't help himself. They wrote to say, "Emily, thank you sounds so inadequate for the concern & care you showed to us during our hospital stay. If not for your actions on his behalf regarding treatment, I am not sure he would be where he is now. You are very special and an amazing nurse."

Emily is an outstanding caregiver. Her ever present care and compassion helped the team save this patient. She is truly deserving of this honor and recognition.
