Oncology staff nurse Elizabeth (Liz) Benedetti, BSN, RN, OCN is the newest recipient of Jefferson’s DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

Liz was nominated by her colleague on 3 West Medical Oncology, Christy Muldoon, BSN, RN, OCN. Writing that she was proud to be Liz’s co-worker Christy said, “Liz provides consistent delivery of excellent patient care with attention to every detail. With nursing as a second career, Liz has excelled in her role as an oncology nurse and has become quite the resource and leader on our unit in the past few years. Liz delivers comprehensive care to our patients with a level of enthusiasm and passion that we all strive to achieve. Communication is one of Liz's many strong attributes in addition to her willingness to learn, mentor new staff, and demonstrate her role as a true team player.”

Christy’s nomination letter cited specific examples of Liz’s extraordinary compassion for patients. According to the nomination, Liz navigated a Portuguese speaking oncology patient throughout his entire hospital stay, translating for him and being available to every rounding physician whether or not she was assigned to this patient. She often stayed late or came in on a day off to facilitate this patient's care.

Liz’s compassion shows with every patient for whom she cares within our very complex oncology and hematologic malignancy population. A recently certified oncology nurse, Liz is often seen staying past her shift to ensure the comfort of a patient newly diagnosed with leukemia to initiate an extensive ongoing education plan for this complex diagnosis.

No job is too big and Liz embraces additional assignments while caring for her own patients. A representative for her unit’s Evidence-Based Practice Staff Nurse Leadership Committee, Liz is an active educator for the GetWellNetwork. With the new teletracking system in effect, Liz has become our unit trainer. It is clear through these many examples that Liz embodies the extraordinary professional practice that this award was designed to recognize.
