Earnestine purchased a baby swing for a patient who stayed in the NICU for 2 months as he went through withdrawals because he was born to a mother who abused opiates. He had many days of hypersensitivity, irritability, and crying; the swing gave the staff another tool to use to help ease his discomfort. At the time of discharge, Earnestine insisted that the swing go with this sweet baby so the parents would also have this tool to help when he became irritable and difficult to comfort.
