Diane Page has initiated a "Comfort Cart" in the Tradition Emergency Room. She recognized the need of family members who are in the process of grieving or facing uncertainties regarding their loved ones, to have special care. Diane created this cart which includes literature, various religious affiliation tokens, "comfort stones" and memory blankets. The result has been amazing. I have seen family members cry at the special thought when a staff member has presented a memory stone to them representing their loved one. Some of these stones have specific dedications like "Mom", "Dad" or "Special Friends". Pictures are also taken- such as a loved one's hand holding their deceased spouse's hand - which are priceless to families. Another item included in this cart is a memory blanket that is placed on a loved one, and given to the family member after the patient has passed.
Since Diane has initiated this cart, other units and other Martin facilities have expressed a great interest in the cart and the power it brings to the families of our patients. Diane has dedicated numerous hours to the success of this cart; she has secured funding, contacted organizations for support and has even arranged to have three more carts delivered to Martin so they can be spread across the organization.
Diane's idea has exploded with success. I feel her dedication and compassion for our families and patients has gone beyond that of an ordinary nurse's role. She has shown exceptional care and leadership, and I believe she deserves a DAISY award for this special contribution to our patients and families.
