I was called to insert a PICC line in a particularly cantankerous patient. Diane prepared the patient for my arrival and assisted in getting H into bed. She made sure that H received his pain medication prior to the procedure. After Diane left the room and as I was about to start the evaluation procedure, the patient refused, stating he didn't want to be bothered. My colleague, Amanda, left the room to notify H's nurse, who was tied up with another patient. Diane was literally walking off the floor, jacket on, purse in hand yet when Amanda mentioned the situation and asked her to come and talk with H, Diane did not hesitate and immediately came to the room. Not only did she talk with H about the necessity of the PICC line, she told the patient that she would stay with him during the procedure. She removed her coat, placed her handbag down and donned the appropriate attire to hold his hand and remain at the bedside.
This is not the first time I have witnessed Diane go above and beyond for her patient. In fact, she regularly gives of herself to anybody in need; patients, coworkers, family, it does not matter. Her compassion and generosity is inspiring.
