Cristina recently cared for a patient who was quadriplegic, aphasic, and blind due to an accident. Cristina was told in report that the patient constantly moans and attempts to bite at the staff if they get close to him. Cristina discovered the patient was able to answer yes and no questions, and appeared to only moan and attempt to bite when he was frustrated. After spending more time with the patient, Cristina discovered the patient could spell words by saying yes or no to letters as Cristina said the alphabet. Cristina patiently said the alphabet many, many times, so the patient was able to communicate with her. She cared for the patient for 2 nights and developed a great relationship with the patient. There were even times when the patient was spelling out jokes and laughing with Cristina.
Cristina was extremely patient, calm, and dedicated to the patient. It takes a very special person to take the time to say the alphabet as many times as she did in those 2 shifts. Cristina never appeared rushed or bothered by the time that was required in order for the patient to communicate. I know the patient was very appreciative of Cristina, and I am not sure anyone will be able to match her ability to connect with this patient. Cristina deserves to be recognized for a job well done with this patient.
